The pledge of allegiance to the United States of America flag was always something I was so proud of while in elementary school. It brings me great sadness to see that the meaning has been lost and plagued with controversy. The two words, "under God" could cause this. Thank goodness for history and archives. Perhaps someday it will have the same meaning again for Americans living in the United States.

I remember my sixth grade class trip when we visited many of the historical sites in Philadelphia. That was the day I learned about Outhouses, and was informed my grandmother had one attached to the back of her house in Bethlehem. In my defense, that was not among the normal topics of conversations one would mention at the dinner table. When we got to Betsy Ross’s house, I asked my teacher, Mr. Hawkins where the bathroom was, and when I re-joined the group, I said to my teacher, “Wow, I didn’t know they had paid toilets back then.” Needless to say, I am sure he still remembers that incident, and I wish I could remember more of that trip than the color of the public restrooms at the rear of Betsy Ross’s house.
